About Dobermans
An overview of the breed
Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann (1834-1894) of Apolda, Germany combines several breeds of dogs to create Doberman Pinschers. A tax collector by trade he wanted to create a dog that would be loyal, obedient a good companion and highly protective.
The Doberman is a mixture of breeds that include the German Shepherd, Great Dane and Weimaraner, but most notably the German Pinscher and Rottweiler. Powerful in the hindquarters with a deep chest, our Dobermans are very athletic dogs that excel in agility obedience and protection work. The muzzle is long, therefore providing the leverage for an extremely strong bite. Dobermans should stand on their toes (not the pads) and are usually heavy-footed.
Oh, and the ears are always cropped and the tail is always docked – in line with the breed standard.
Temperament
The IDC breed standard defines desirable character traits for the Doberman temperament as being: energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.
Since the puppies we provide all come from work and show titled parents only – the temperaments our dogs display are very much in keeping with the FCI international breed standard.
We will not provide puppies with undesirable traits within their temperaments such as overly submissive or fearful dogs or aggressive dogs.
Since we have worked with the kennels and breeders for a number of years we have priority when selecting the best puppies from a litter, thereby ensuring that you receive a puppy that looks and behaves the way Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann intended.
Appearance
From the FCI international breed standard:
The appearance is that of a dog of medium size, with a body that is square. Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.
Colours
Dobermans come in 4 colours: Black, Brown, Blue (greyish), and Fawn (a light tan colour, also called Isabella). The rust or tan markings should be sharply defined and appear above each eye and on the muzzle, throat, chest, on all legs and feet and below the tail. Primarily, Cropped and Docked Elite Dobermanns UK provide black and tan and brown and tan puppies although we do from time to time have access to other colours.
Height & Weight
Height at the withers: Males 26 to 28 inches or 66-72 cm, ideal about 27 1/2 inches. Females 24 to 26 inches or 61-68 cm, ideally about 25.5 inches. There is no FCI standard for weight but ideally Dobermans should have sufficient size for the best combination of strength endurance and agility.
